Inhalt:
This remarkable epic in free verse immediately preceded Döblin's best- known work, Berlin Alexanderplatz. Indeed, Döblin viewed Biberkopf, the anti-hero of Berlin Alexanderplatz, as "Manas with a Berlin accent". Told in a clear vigorous language of many moods and voices, Manas is the story of a war hero who, suddenly struck with the existential realisation of death, ventures onto Shiva's Field of the Dead. Three demons plan to use his body to migrate to the human world. Manas's guardian, Puto, attempting to drive out the demons, inadvertently kills the body, and Manas's soul wafts back onto the Field. Reborn through the love of his spouse Savitri, he returns to the world as a human poised between the demonic and the divine. Döblin's reputation rests largely on the major fictions he called 'epics'. He sought to reinvigorate, under the difficult conditions of the modern age, the art with which Homer, Virgil, Chaucer, Dante and Cervantes enthralled large audiences over long spans of time. This brilliant translation by Chris Godwin is the first into any language of this mesmerising, unique and totally rewarding piece of literature.
